Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku
Death March to The Parallel World Rhapsody
tags: isekai, harem, and romance.
I love this anime. After reading some comments it seems that people either love or hate it. Lets start with the isekai tag. Are we seeing too many isekai recently? It's kind of like saying, "there is too much fantasy." Isekai is more specific in that it's being transported to a fantasy world. It is often but not exclusive to a video game world. This seems reasonable considering how many anime weebs love video games. You don't often hear that there are too many high school anime. Because high school is the setting and it can be a romance, comedy, or supernatural. It's the same with isekai. Death March is isekai in setting but slice of life is a more prominent theme. There is some action, it's a video game world after all. Is it also harem? The mc's party gains cute girls pretty early on. But he views them as family and not romantic interests. This spares us some of the usual harem tropes. Harem being another love or hate subject among people. Watching this anime weekly left me with a strong sense that Death March was a slice of life. When I finally sat down to binge it the romance between Satou (mc) and Zena becomes more apparent. The romance is painted with a light touch and is a little one sided on Zena's part. There is also an unexplained flashback that foreshadows the possibility of another love interest for Satou. This leaves a future with Zena questionable.
So what is the plot without giving too much away? A game designer gets iekai'd. He ends up with a high level but no skills. When he gains a skill he can max it out because of his level. He treats his new world experience as a vacation. He decides to lay low and enjoy himself, leaving the question of returning home for later. The first episode is kind of dull. They spend half of it showing how tedious his job is (death march) and why he would need an escape.
I enjoyed this series. It's not ground breaking but still entertains. There is supposed to be enough material for a season 2. I hope it happens :3 I'm not sure why this anime attracts animosity. Isekai seems to invoke strong opinions in people. What are your thoughts?
